Based on a 1980 BMW R65
Things didn't go quite to plan getting his project bike to us for a complete makeover. Our client Adrian decided to ride his recently acquired, modified scrambler style BMW R65, to us assuming the previous owner had bolted it together well enough to make the hundred mile or so journey. Well, various bits fell off, bolts came loose and it ended up on the back of an AA recovery truck! Once the dust settled a plan was hatched and it was decided to go all in and get the bike exactly as he wanted it with more performance, better brakes, suspension and a full suite of the latest electronics. He also wanted some luggage capacity for the odd camping trip away in the summer months.
We discovered this bike was a bit of a hybrid with an R65 chassis and a R80 motor and transmission. This actually is a good combination as the lighter, shorter chassis with the more powerful long stroke motor makes it a fun bike to ride.
Once the teardown was completed and some fabrication done to accept an R80/100 tank, the frame, swinging arm and other parts were sent off to the powdercoaters for a fresh satin black finish.
The motor was stripped, refreshed and treated to some upgrades including a sports camshaft, Siebenrock 1000cc power kit, heavy duty clutch to handle the extra power and a set of Mikuni VM carbs with oval high flow filters. Out went the original charging system and replaced with an Enduralast 450w brushless permanent magnet unit,a combined regulator/rectifier which is compatible with the smaller more powerful Lithium Iron Antigravity battery being used. A full transmission refresh with a satin black heat resistant finish to match the motor completed the powertrain work.
Once the front suspension was shortened and rebuilt, the big brake upgrade kit provided by our pals over the pond R90X could be bolted on. 320mm floating discs, Brembo radial calipers with sintered pads mated up with the new Accossato radial pump mastercylinder now provide some serious stopping power. Lightweight spoked wheels were specified instead of the original heavy cast ones and by chance we had a used set in stock which were then refurbished with stainless spokes, the alloy rims powdercoated satin black and topped off with a set of Bridgestone BT46 tyres.
To compliment the engine work, a full stainless low slung exhaust system with dyno tested reverse cone silencers was made and treated to a black Ceramic coated finish. Once the new stepped subframe and fully adjustable YSS shocks were fitted, the small removable pannier frames could go on and will take some sturdy but lightweight waxed canvas bags.
Upfront, a lightbar was created to support a pair of spotlights and LED indicators that sit either side of the LED Highsider headlamp and creates a different look as well as illuminating road much better.
Dressing the Renthal Fat Bars are a pair of multi stage heated grips, push button switches, Accossato adjustable levers and Mastercylinder and a stainless top yoke nut incorporating the start button.
These are all linked up via a bespoke wiring loom to a Motogadget M Unit and keyless ignition.
To top everything off, the tank and new alloy mudguards were treated to a top quality paint job by our paintpals at Wicked Coatings. Finished in Old Engish White, Pearl Black, gold pinstriping and airbrushed logo's, it really does 'pop' out in the sunlight. Mating up to the tank is the exquisitely crafted seat by our go to upholsterer Glen Moger which was finished in black leather with gold diamond stitching and a Guardian Angel embroidered on the back panel. Just in case you were wondering, Guardian Angel in Polish is Aniol Stroz, the name of this bike!
